Along with the exhibition Susanne Paesler: Retrospective, the SCHAUWERK presents a selection of works under the title Ortswechsel [Change of location], which are in the Kunstmuseum Bonn’s collection or are there on permanent loan.
These are works of the 1980s to the 2000s by Pia Fries (b. 1955), Bernard Frize (b. 1954), Katharina Grosse (b. 1961), and Toon Verhoef (b. 1946). The artists are all exponents of non-representational painting, but exhibit very different artistic approaches. Thus Katharina Grosse’s transparent painting offers a counterpoint to the impasto and almost physical paint applications of Pia Fries. Toon Verhoef, in contrast, is an artist who knows how to stage in painting the great distinctive form. In addition, Bernard Frize is open for artistic experiments, always providing an insight into the genesis of the work.
These four postwar-generation artists are connected to Susanne Paesler in the quest for the conditions and possibilities of painting against the discursive backdrop of painting’s much proclaimed end.
