With sculptures in nature – on the beaches of the west coast of England or in the Alps – as well as the urban space, such as skyscrapers in cities like Hong Kong and New York, Antony Gormley has gained worldwide recognition. The exhibition at SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen will be the most significant survey of the artist’s work ever to take place in Germany, offering a comprehensive overview of Gormley's artistic work. The presentation comprises some 30 works from the artist's studio and the Schaufler collection, including works on view to the public for the first time.
Antony Gormley explores the possibilities of the medium of sculpture, where the space of art can be a place of becoming in which new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. Using his own body as material, tool and subject, he makes evocations of a variety of states: exposure, isolation, emergence and growth, all evidenced in this exhibition.
The sculptures interrogate their surroundings, catalysing a reflexivity and encouraging viewers to reassess their own position in space and time.
The exhibition forefronts Gormley’s transformation of sculpture from purely material and formal issues into an exploration of life itself.
Wednesday to Sunday 11 am – 6 pm
